Layout Widths

WordPress provides 3 different widths:

In WordPress’s Align Menu

Default/”Content Width”

This is the default width of any blocks. In our case, we’ve made it rather wide, in order to accommodate the most common layouts — 40/60 columns and 50/50 columns.

Wide Width

This is just a bit wider than the default content width, and can be used for large images, quotes, dividers, carousels, etc.

Full Width

This spans the full width of the website. Useful for cover blocks, large images, carousels, etc.

With the Wide and Full Widths, you have an additional option: “Inner blocks use content width”.

When set to Yes/On (which is the default) this means that even though the Group is Wide or Full Width, the blocks inside the group will still be the Default Width. This is useful for when you might want a wider background color or image, but you still want the inside blocks to be the default content width.

When set to No/Off, the inside blocks will be as wide as the containing Group.

As a Group Variation

Because our default content width is too wide for most text, we also have a Group Variation called Limit Line Length. This limits the width of anything inside the group to be a reasonable line length for reading. This is useful for body copy where you do not want to use a 2-column layout.
