Legal Structure
The Northampton Historical Society was incorporated in 1905 as a non-profit organization in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, independent of Northampton’s city government. Learn more about the founding of the historical society.
In 1989, the society began doing business as Historic Northampton. In 2012, the organization’s legal name was changed to Historic Northampton, Inc.
Historic Northampton is governed by a board of trustees. Daily operations are managed by staff and volunteers.

As an independent, non-profit organization, Historic Northampton relies on the generosity of its members, grants, and program fees to fulfill its mission.
