Cutler Block
40 – 46 Maple St. Florence, MA

The original section of the Cutler building is the southern portion at the corner of Maple and West Center Streets. It was erected in 1865 by William Godfrey and L. K. Baker, who moved their store to this site from an old cotton factory boarding house. Henry F. Cutler bought a half-interest in the business in 1866 and later formed Cutler, Plympton & Co., which carried groceries and dry goods. Cutler also ran a post office on the site and the building became known as the Cutler Block. Additions to the north (44–46 Maple), primarily used as residential space, were built in 1873–84.
Through much of the first half of the 20th century, Cutler, Plimpton & Co. dry goods occupied 40 Maple Street, with W.A. Burdick & Co. grocers at 42 Maple. From 1950 to 1968, Addis & Co., a hardware store and plumbing-supplies store, occupied 40 Maple. Hebert Sales and Service, a television store, moved into 40 Maple in 1976 and did business there until the mid- to late-1980s. In the 1980s, Ouellette Carpet was located at 42 Maple.
The popular bar and restaurant called Side Street Café opened at 42 Maple in 2006. Owned by Patrick Shannon, the restaurant was known for innovative dishes showcasing local foods. The downturn in the economy was cited for its closure in 2013. Other recent occupants of 40–46 Maple have included an Irish goods store, Full Circle Bike Shop, the Zoom ‘n’ Groom Room (a pet groomer), Edward Jones Financial Advisor, CyclePottery, and Little Roots Studio (a music school).
