Read about Jim Moynihan’s experience working at Northampton Lodging while also a resident.

What’s your favorite thing about living here [in your new apartment]?

Quiet. And there’s an elevator here so I ain’t got to lug my bike upstairs. Like I said, it’s just quiet in here compared to the Lodging. The walls [there] were, like, that thick [Jim gestures indicating that the walls were very thin]. You know. You hear everything, even three rooms down. You could hear it in your place. I had to crank my tv up and then it’s no fair to the other people because then it’s bothering them. That’s why I was never there. I took off whenever I could. I was out of there.

Where did you go when you left?

Down the Meadows. Oxbow. Fishing. Something. I’m an outdoors person. I hate being stuck in the house.

You catch anything good or is it just more for fun?

I just do it for the sport of it. I don’t keep anything. I’m just waiting for kayak season so I can take the kayak out this year.

Monday is the best [day to be out on the river] because everybody’s at work.

Everybody’s gone! You get a couple scragglers but there’s not as many speed boats and pontoon boats floating around all over the place, you know? Kicking wakes up so you’re flopping around like a fish. I like that section of the river as you’re headed down towards Holyoke too. It’s a little faster down there, but nobody really goes down there. It’s beautiful.

We went down there, me and a buddy of mine who lives here. We took the kayaks out down that end. We were right up where the dinosaur tracks are. We went down there and stuff like that. And frickin’ eagles all over the place in the trees. We got our binoculars out there and stuff. Down by the metal bridge, there’s one every day. Sits right on the telephone pole. Every day. Like clockwork. Usually right around 1:00, that’s when he sits there. I know where the nest is, down further in there. I don’t I’ll tell anybody that too much. I don’t want anyone going and messing with it or anything like that.
